Our History/Our Present

Founded in December 18th, 1916 by the Dominican Sisters Religious Order, St. Joseph's Hospital is a fully accredited 44-bed General Hospital. Ideally situated on 12 acres...
...the Hospital is centrally located on 22 Deanery Road in Southeast Kingston.  With its manicured lawns and lush shade trees, St. Joseph’s Hospital embodies holistic healthcare.  The main Hospital provides a wide range of surgical, Medical, Ophthalmic, Psychiatric, Rehabilation and other specialized facilities including all diagnostic services.  

 

Adjacent to the main Hospital is St. Joseph ’s Medical Centre, which provides offices for General Practitioners as well as several Specialists. Also located on property are:

  • Consie Walters Cancer Hospice
  • Direct Diagnostics MRI, MD and C.T. Scanning Services and Ultra sound Technology
  • Central Medical Laboratory
  • Wellness & Fitness Centre
  • Our Lady of the Poor Medical Clinic

Structure

St. Joseph 's Hospital is owned and operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kingston, with an advisory Board of Directors, consisting of medical professionals, members of the private sector, and the Archbishop of Kingston.

The hospital Mission and objectives are all guided by the Executive Director and supported by the medical committee, the Friend’s of St. Joseph’s, the Directors of Nursing and Finance and a vivacious team of non-medical and medical staff.

The hospital is accredited and recognized by the local health sector and actively participates as a member of the Jamaica Private Hospital Association.

Senior Citizen Residence opened

1985

10 acres of land transferred to the Government to build the Golden Age Home

1985

Consie Walters Cancer Hospice opened

1989

Sr. Mary Paschal, FMS, longest serving and last religious Administrator retires after 15 years service

1990

First secular Administrator, Marjorie Hamilton takes up office

1997

X-Ray Department retooled

1998

Residence Closed

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Services (MRI) comes to STJH

Hospital downsized

Maternity Unit refurbished
